Do you know anyone in any tech start-ups?

Is anyone else in the NYC Metro area a Veteran involved with Tech based start up companies? Or maybe know of any veterans in tech start ups?

Matthew,

I'm a Marine veteran involved with the tech startup scene in Boulder, CO. Obviously most of my network is local, but I would highly recommend reaching out to the Techstars community in Denver (and if you have the means to do so maybe even consider being an "associate" for their program to get plugged in) as well as networking with the Scout Ventures crew. The latter was founded by Brad who is ex-Army. Also, a few things to keep in mind based on my transition into the startup world are:

1. Network like hell via the military connection. It's strong and will get an above average response rate to cold emails.
2. It's difficult to hop straight into the startup world unless you have a very impactful skill (ie - software development)
3. Based on #2, it's okay to aim for direct entry into a startup, but you may have to land "nearby" at a 20-ish person company that needs a general "cat herder" role, gives you some tangible tech industry experience, and then move to the startup world in job #2 or #3.

Hi Matthew: Get in touch with Matthew Brimer, the co-founder of General Assembly, a company that specializes in offering courses in high tech entrepreneurship and start-ups. He knows a number of people in the New York start-up community. He's at mobrimer@gmail.com Tell him that Scott Lackey from Jugular recommended that you write him. Let me know how it goes. You might want to network with something like this: http://www.fundingpost.com/entre.asp?refer=VCP-689 or go direct to angel fund like http://www.arcangelfund.com to ask if they know any veteran in their angel portfolio

Matthew,

If you're still looking, AVID Technical Resources has an NY office and we work with startups. We also have remote positions and obviously, plenty of other positions not associated with startups. Check out our site at www.avidtr.com or email us at info@avidtr.com if you're looking to get into IT. Good luck with your search!

Matthew,
Good morning and thank you for your service. In 2011 New York had 479 Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR)/Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) awards and grants totaling $142M. Digging deeper in the data base will point to companies and POC’s for a wide variety of topics and technologies.

Hey Matthew,

I was watching TechStars, I think on Bloomberg, and even though it isn't a guarantee, you could probably watch that show and see what companies are trying to start up as a new tech company. It's an option.

I believe Polytechnic University in downtown Brooklyn still has a business incubator. There are other business incubators in the North East. Check for them online. What are you looking to do?

The most exciting start up in NY has to be MakerBot in Brooklyn ... the developers of the 3D printer... check them out at www.makerbot.com

I know that you are in NY but you may want to check out http://www.tbinnovates.com/, a tech incubator...there may be some ideas there. My step son is the Executive Director of Sports Media and Community Relations for LA TECH....we toured the campus recently and he pointed out their Biz Incubator, and other start ups on the campus...that could be a good place to start. You should also contact www.score.org for your closest or on-line mentor where good ideas abound. SCORE has a Veterans Fast Launch initiative, which all chapters are involved in.
We are hosting a Veterans Expo October 6th, 2012, at the St. Petersburg Marriott, 12600 Roosevelt Blvd, St. Petersburg, FL.

Matthew,

Are you looking for information on tech start-ups or are you looking to participate in one? I'm involved with a tech start-up launching the end of August. It's not location based so if you have any interest get in touch.

By the way, no hot dog carts are involved.
