Small Business Back-End Data & POS

Veteran

Hello group:

I am starting my first business next year. I am doing a little research on POS systems. I am going into an industry where cataloguing is very important. I want a system that is modern and useful. Also, I want to be able to build profiles for valued/loyal customers so that I can track their taste(s), price range, season trends, etc.

If anyone has any expertise in these areas, please contact me with your feedback!

When my wife opened her bakery, we used ShopKeep. It is a little pricy, but it will do almost everything you can think of. We did not use half of the features available, like tracking customers, and found it very helpful.

I did find it a bit difficult to set up the register (not their interface, but my layout), I changed it several times over time to make it more user friendly and to capture data better.

The metrics display was great once I figured how I needed to set the register up properly.

How did you find the monthly fees? I know there are the transactional, flat, and incidentals, all in addition to the wholesale versus markup. Any info you can shed on this topic is much appreciated!

Hello Kat
There are a multitude things you can do to engage your clientele. I assume you will have a FB page, website, and want listings on the major directories?
Assuming you are then you can use FB's pixel to help build an audience to retarget.
You can also build out your Internet presence with reviews from customers on the review sites.

If you go with a Wordpress CMS site you can add the WooCommerce with Lightspeed POS plugin that will do what you want.

There is too much to go in detail here. I would also build an online store and sell complementary items on that which will track purchases. (E.g. Glasses, mugs, shirts, hats, promotional items) You can have an exclusive members deal that pushes out deals and upcoming events for your business as well.

Hope this helps answer your question.
Best wishes,
Jim

I am opening a wine bar. People will physically be coming into my store.

Have you a business plan ? Would like to read it.

In that plan, what does it say about your target customer base and how you will motivate them to use your system rather than Amazon or Jet ? Whats your plan to address the gross margins when those retailers/etailers have such an advantage ?

Amazon has a twenty year head start on profiling customers and partners with Google Adwords to pop ads that relate to their customers, even on web pages not owned by Amazon. How will you compete with this entrenchment ?
