Transitioning to Consulting

Veteran

Gerard Connolly Washington, DC

I would like to transition from the Army to the consulting industry. I am currently a company commander with a history undergraduate degree and no MBA. I would like to work in the Deloitte Federal Consulting practice. What is a good starting position I should apply for at that company as a transitioning JMO? Thanks for any advice.

Gerard,

I hope you had an opportunity to follow-up with Erv and Joe. I just wanted to pass on, that as far as Deloitte goes you should be seeking an entry level position, Consultant or Senior Consultant. To see specific job openings go to https://jobs2.deloitte.com/us/en/

At the top of the screen you will see a field to “Enter job title or location.” Enter either a key word or location and then click “Search jobs.”

A broad list of matching jobs will appear, and you can then refine your search parameters from the left-hand selection bar.

Tanks for you service and good luck. Let me know if you have any questions.

Kevin

Hi Gerard. It's great that you're thinking about consulting as a new career path. Joe will be able to help you from a JMO perspective. I retired from the Air Force and have been with Deloitte for the past six years. I'd be happy to share some additional thoughts if you'd like to connect. Good luck!

Seems like Joe will have good advice for you! I'll add this .....

Keep in mind that consulting is a way of delivering value, rather than an industry per se. Some consult in computers, some in sales, etc. Perhaps what you want is management consulting.

Think about:
What do you know how to do (or what would you like to learn well enough to be able to offer it to others?)? What analytical & communication skills do you have? WHY consulting?

Try Gallup's StrengthsQuest online assessment tool (about $10) to discover your top strengths, so you can market yourself best.

Best success to you!

Hi Gerard,
I took a similar career path coming out of the Marine Corps. Feel free to message me if you want to talk more about opportunities at Deloitte or JMO options more broadly.
Best,
Joe

Hi Gerald, thank you for your service. Jennifer asked and offered some great advice. I echo her comment in terms of deciding what experience(s) do you bring to the table that an employer would value. It sounds like you have made some good inroads and contacts. Informational interviews with companies that interest you will help you refine your search and enhance your network. Good luck.
