Alfonso,
To add to the stream of good advice, another great free resource to checkout is SCORE.Org This is a national non-profit comprised of volunteer mentors who are business professionals supporting the small business community. They are associated with the SBA. There are local chapters throughout the country.
A mentor will be assigned to you and workshops are offered targeted at start-ups as well as existing businesses.
Good luck,
Pete

Alfonso-
Thanks for your service!
Have you reached out to your local Texas Small Business Development Center (SBDC)?
http://www.sbdctexas.org/
I have worked with a couple of Florida SBDC offices and they provide services to support small business owners and startups, including veterans' entrepreneur programs.
Best of luck!

Alfonso,
It's great that you are seeking advice. There are a lot of moving parts to a startup. While getting a tax ID number is probably a bit premature, there are some things you can do right now.

First, start developing a business model strategy. That will help you see how the different aspects of your business (marketing, costs, customers, revenue, partnerships etc) will all work together.

When you say "home security business" are you talking an ADT type? That is a huge market with big/existing players. It would take a ton of money to build that type of infrastructure.

Again, that is how a value proposition and business strategy will help you out before you get too deep into something that might not work out for you.

I help vets like you start and grow their business. Feel free to reach out to me with any further questions.

Thank you Doug,
I will look into franchising. What do you mean by consultant work? I do have a background in law enforcement and homeland security.

Alfonso,

The market is tough for a start up. You will be competing against the established companies that have a history and the advertising dollars. My suggestion is to Google security business franchise. Start that way, learn the ropes, and possibly launch out on your own from there. Or get a franchise and develop it well and make it a good investment. As for me, I have my personal stand alone cloud based security system that will tell me if a bug farts underwater anywhere near my home. But my advice to you is still valid. Look into franchises that use the cutting edge cloud based security systems. I have set up some of the best systems for companies and saved them thousands. If you have the background, you may look into consultant work, but, truthfully, if your resume doesn't say "former FBI/CIA/Homeland Security, it will be difficult to get that going. Check out franchises, it is a good place to start. Good Luck!

The very first step is to write a business plan. You can get templates here :
