Partner with another established agency. Yes, you'll lose some control. But you'll gain so much in contacts, tacit knowledge, & real-world experience, and you'll be able to become engaged immediately. Opening & operating your own group home takes much time and money, so why not use someone else's time and money first?

Jack and Paul make some great points. The entire process of creating and maintaining a non-profit (of any kind) is another layer of red tape...in addition to the processes of starting a new business.

I don't say that to keep you from your goals, just to be aware so you can reach your goals. Experience in that entire industry would be a huge benefit, unless you already have been down that road.

If you are looking for funding, does that mean you have a business plan in place already? If not, I might suggest that. Let me know if I can help in other ways.

I would research behavioral health agencies, VA maybe state department of mental health to determine who would need the service and any interest in the service you want to provide. One of these organizations may assist you or guide you in the right direction. You want to know who the service providers are and potential funding sources.
I think it would be difficult to get funding if you are not part of the local community but any of the above entities may become your advocate or assist you in your pursuit.

The work of applying for grants, federal licences, social service facilitation and medical certifications can be quite daunting and lengthy so I would advise finding a local rehab center (does not need to be vet specific) and volunteer in their back office processing paperwork and learn the agencies and requirements through the people doing it.
