Dig into careeronstop.org or bls.gov and searching careers that 1) interest you and 2) you could qualify for. These two resources will give you the salary and qualifications, basics. Now research 30-40 job postings in with that position and build a master position-i.e 4 years experience, a BS in business, or a certificate from a community college etc. Now work on obtaining the missing qualifications or building your resume to match those positions and researching companies. Look up Informational Interviewing, where you call companies to research the positions and career. Great way to gather information from people doing what you want to do. Good luck.

Mike,
What do you really like to do and can you turn that into a career? If you could pick your ideal job what would it be? There are a lot of questions besides these two you need to ask yourself. Research tells us the average person will now change jobs ten times during their working career. As far as career fields with growth potential health care and service industries are the growing fields if you enjoy people. With baby boomers retiring in all fields the trades such as plumbing, carpentry, masonry, construction, heavy equipment operator, sheet metal, boiler maker, and the gas and oil industries offer opportunities. Don't forget local, state and federal jobs. Take you time identify your interests and determine what jobs fit.

All jobs are just jobs if you do not like what you are doing. I worked in Cable TV for 40 years and loved every day of it. Anything you work at and like doing has to have an income that makes you comfortable and not worrying about your next paycheck just barely making your expenses. Good soldier aside (civilians do not understand what you did and what you accomplished), let the group know what your next move is.... Full-time education, part-time education/part-time work, Full-time work. The World is your oyster.
