Alex, After reading your profile the key is going to be transferring your 12Y into civilian terms. I am guesing that you've been certified in most of the systems but having those even on hand at your interviews can help. Also, if you have any unclassiifed work examples bring them since it helps bridge the military-civilian gap. There are a few postings in Olympia according to indeed.com; 2 with the VA. Again tough job will be to translate imagery analysis, etc to what is typiclally done in a civilian career depending on what you were doing especially in you were in TS or TS/SCI environments. If you'd like, please send your resume and job descriptions and certs to me and I might be able to help you with it.

I'd also ask that you look into 12Y positions in the USAR. We have a huge deficeit in our units but I'm on the east coast. I was just having a discussion with a BG on our 12Y needs. I have an opening in our BDE HQs for a 12Y SGT/SSG/SFC in our CIM Cell.

Alex,

First, thank you for your service. The geospatial field is pretty broad, so my comments here can't be too specific. Geospatial includes pretty much everything from digital geography to sophisticated remote satellite sensing platforms. the purpose of the geospatial analysis spans issues of demographics analysis to agricultural applications. If you are intent on staying in the Pacific Northwest, I suggest you look at the State Geological Survey who often inherited geospatial issues as they became more common and accepted in land and resource management, siting of geohazards, and monitoring of resource-extractive industries.

As I can't tell just what direction in geospatial, it's hard to give advice. If you are open to a different location, the United States Geological Survey (HQ in Reston, VA) is a possiblity, although they have offices elsewhere. Most states have some capability as well.

If you care to contact me directly, perhaps we could talk about what your vision is, and then maybe a clearer path might emerge.

There are a variety of careers within the GIS market, including Ground Survey, Aerial Imagery Operator, Imagery Analyst, GIS Analyst and GIS Developer/Programmer. Entry-level positions generally require a degree in GIS and/or relevant military experience in GIS as well as a clearance for intel-related GIS. Experience with ESRI, ERDAS, ARC/GIS Suite would also be required- and is generally obtained during the degree coursework. Once you have the degree, experience and certs there is a decent market in DC and elsewhere. However, without those it would be extremely difficult to compete for even an entry-level position because so many folks have the degree, experience & certs.
