I will be heading to the Atlanta, GA next week for the NVSBE, and I need to find out a good place to stay and activities to do in the area. I am open to any suggestions. I prefer to stay close to the location of the event so I don't have to travel too far.

Since the event is at the Georgia World Congress Center in downtown Atlanta, you're probably better off staying close to the event location.. The Omni Hotel is nearby. Another option is The Marriott.
As far as things to do, you might want to visit The World of Coke Museum or The Georgia Aquarium.
If you like Mexican food, I highly recommend Uncle Julio's. Gladys Knight has a couple of restaurants in the area. I hear Mary Mac's Tea Room is great for soul food.
