Hi Stapleton - check these out these links to a few of the companies I recommended in an earlier post. They are anywhere from 1-3 1/2 hours away from VA Beach. Most drivers I know who live a few hours away will simply drive to the terminal and park their personal vehicle while they are OTR. Good luck!

Old Dominion (1 hour from Virginia Beach – in Norfolk) - http://www.odfl.com/Content/openingsDriverCo.faces
Schneider (2 ½ hours from Virginia Beach) - http://schneiderjobs.com/search-driving-opportunities
Wal-Mart (3 ½ hours from Virginia Beach in Mount Crawford) - http://jobs.walmart.com/search/advanced-search/ASCategory/OTR%20Driver/ASPostedDate/-1/ASCountry/-1/ASState/Virginia/ASCity/-1/ASLocation/-1/ASCompanyName/-1/ASCustom1/-1/ASCustom2/-1/ASCustom3/-1/ASCustom4/-1/ASCustom5/-1/ASIsRadius/false/ASCityStateZipcode/-1/ASDistance/-1/ASLatitude/-1/ASLongitude/-1/ASDistanceType/-1

Now is a great time to find a job with UPS. UPS is seeking to hire 50,000 veterans and 93,000 seasonal employees. You can learn about opportunities at UPS.com and apply online.

Stapleton--
Thanks for your service. In terms of careers you couldn't have picked one with greater demand. There is a major shortage of commercial drivers across the US, recently estimated at over 30,000.

In order to help UPS fulfill its commitment to hire over 50,000 veterans by 2018, they were recently approved for the Dept of Labor's Registered Apprenticeship Program for its delivery driver jobs (and they do not require a CDL). Under this program, a veteran can draw their GI Bill funds--with housing supplement-- while learning a skilled "trade". The program has typically been for those who weren't interested in pursuing college yet they could still use their GI Bill benefit. Depending on your location and remaining GI Bill benefit, this can total over $30,000 tax-free over a 3-4 year period in addition to your pay.

UPS has package car driver (or service provider) positions as well as tractor-trailer driver job in Virginia, and UPS’ Freight business unit is also headquartered in Richmond. You can view all open positions at upsjobs.com.

Best of luck to you during your career search--it's a growing career field for sure.

Regards --Chris

Also FedEx and UPS hire often - they are both great companies to work for. There is a shortage of good drivers so you should find some good opportunities
