Transitioning from the Army, looking to seek a solid networking base, and professional advice.

Veteran

j s Apo, AE

My wife and I will be transitioning from the Army this fall and moving to Pittsburgh. My wife will be finishing her college while I find employment. I have already been actively searching for job vacancies within the area. I have applied with the rail road companies and many security positions already, I am willing to do just about any job. What are some employers in the area that are Veteran friendly? I am currently deployed overseas so actively networking is a major issue for me right now. I would like to receive any information that could possibly help ease the transition into the civilian world.

Thanks

Hi Joshua,
Congratulations on your transition, and thank you for your service. If you would like assistance in building a resume, please feel free to reach out to me. As for jobs that you would like to do, I am more than happy to discuss that, as well, and then see how we can tailor your resume to highlight your skill-sets.

Being remote can be a challenge, but nothing that is impossible to overcome. Linked in is a great source, as mentioned, to build a professional network. However, as that is your professional facing profile, I also suggest making it pointed to the main career goals that you have. Looking forward to assisting you!

Tom

Hi Joshua,
Go to USAJOBS.COM for jobs with the Federal Government, vets get preferential consideration when appling for jobs. Also they give you credit for your military time. Word of warning the application process is a little challenging (it's the government-what do you expect).

Hi Joshua,

I read your comments and have a little advice that might help. First off, instead of being willing to do "any" job, narrow your focus and go after the one or two (or five) types of work you REALLY want, that you will do like your life depended on it. Employers want you to want THEM specifically, not just a job, and if you use the language you did in your post, they are more inclined to try and find someone who will be passionate about the opportunity they're offering.

Once you have decided on that, there are networks of professionals in just about EVERY possible line of work you could hope to do; check websites that are industry and city specific for events you can attend once you land in Pittsburgh. LinkedIn as others have said before me, is an ideal place to find industry people in a particular geographic area.

I wish you and your wife the best of luck as you transition to civilian life!

Joshua,
Congratulations on your separation! Reach out to Shad Lorenz of Working Warrior Nation ( shad.lorenz@mvle.org ). They assist in that very topic. What field are you looking to transition to?

Hello Joshua!

Thank you for your and your wife's service.

I second the Linkedin recommendation. Not only is it a great way to network and keep in touch with people who you already know but you can also join groups in your industry on Linkedin to allow you to meet new people and get their attention (you can post responses to questions in the group and begin conversations). Jobs are also posted on the site as well.

Also, I would recommend searching for jobs on indeed.com. Indeed allows you to search multiple company postings on many different websites.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice, I have a list of careers that I'm very interested in, I got them numbered 1-5 and depending on which one is available to me first I'm going to jump on that opportunity. It's hard telling which one will be available once I get to Pittsburgh. I've been constantly monitoring job openings in those specific fields and I would like to have a job lined up before I separate from the Army, so I can have some security. Thanks again!
