Jin, you're lucky because Orange and LA counties have many real estate networking opportunities. Try reading the LA and Orange County Business Journals, business papers that have a heavy emphasis on real estate. They'll show scheduled meetings of different real estate groups, including NAREIT. Most of these are free or have nominal cost. USC and Chapman College both have good real estate schools that probably post networking opportunities. Carl

Hi Jin,

I'm not in real estate, but would like to take a stab at this one.

First, you can join groups on social media, i.e. up to 50 LinkedIn groups in your field, which will enable you to email members in these groups, stay on top of issues, pipe in to establish credibility, and display logos on your profile.

Local meetups (www.meetup.com) or other alumni, business networking, and industry groups (i.e. California Bureau of Real Estate) are another option.

One way to "network" is to reach out to people you may share synergies with via email, LinkedIn or Twitter.

The LinkedIn "Advanced" search allows you to search for contacts by a myriad of criteria such as company, role, keyword, zip code, et.

I always write a personal introduction (rather than send the generic invite) and focus on adding value which can differentiate you from others who come to the table with an outstretched hand. I think you'll find that a lot of people will be happy to chat by phone or in person.

Hope this helps, and thank you for your service!
Gia
