Looking to exit the Corrections Industry

Veteran

Deric Sowersby Trevorton, PA

I have years of security experience, and a degree that has been repetitively useless. I am currently a shift commander in a prison and the changing environment in the state is making the job needlessly unsafe and unmanageable. It seems like the only thing I can do is physical security which is fine but it doesn't pay around me. What should I be doing?

Manage the shop where they make furniture....move if you have to.....if you got the sales head....sell hardware and software to prisons....you have walked the walk and talked the talk...a believable sales guy that has been there is a good start in any sales job. Sales pays well.

Start with an assessment. You may be surprised.

This link has a number you can choose from.

In addition, there is some kind of state/gov workforce development in your area.
They also have assessment tests.

Hi Deric,

I started out with Associate's and Bachelor's degrees in Criminal Justice and worked for over a decade as a law enforcement officer after leaving the military. I transitioned into an entry level tech job (I.T. / Networking) and then expanded with a 2 year degree in Biomedical Equipment Technology. I found that my previous LE training and experience was a perfect fit in areas where knowledge of the law and how to act and document activities in a concise, legally defensible manner were critical. I know this to be the case in a field governed by the FDA, but can also see it equally apply to any industry which is subject to heightened regulation and / or litigious considerations. Perhaps a quick online course in Regulatory Compliance or Project Management would give you a "fresh" bullet for your resume and the ability to articulate how your previous training and experience would apply to positions in a different industry. Good Luck!

Good morning Derec,
You are a shift leader so you must have some management and leadership skills. You probably just need to accentuate them better on your resume and look outside the box. I transitioned from police work eleven years ago with the vow that I would not do "retired cop work."
Feel free to reach out Corporal, and we can chat about it.

Best,
Rob
