A Transitioning Soldier needs an advice between Auditing and Consulting Field

Veteran

Mike W. Washington, DC

Dear Advisors,

I am an active US Army in Germany who will be transitioning back to civilian in the next 6 months. I have a bachelor degree in computer engineering and a master degree in accounting. I worked as an accountant and financial analyst in Chicago, New York and DC areas for a few years before serving 4 years in the military in Korea, Romania and Germany.

I am very interested to work for a CPA firm but I am not 100% sure yet which area I should go for between Auditing or Consulting? Could you please tell me about the life style, working assignment and the exit opportunities in the short and/or long term?

Thank you very much.

I recommend you go into Cybersecurity. Big pay, great job security.

Why be a CPA when you can earn more than $200k/yr doing something else ?

Hi Mickey,
If your passion is in both - combine them... However, where do your skills exist? Employers will be seeking for it all. Per your LI profile - I might recommend adding more focus on your skills as a consultant and or obtaining the recommendation.
Also - consider IT Internal Auditor role (as this compliments your degrees and experience!
The best to you & and Thank You, for your service.

Hi Mickey. Its certainly possible to have a very distinct and focused career in either Auditing or Consulting. However, there are also careers that combine the two. For example, accounting and finance transformation consulting for major corporations or US Government agencies Those jobs are in high demand, and allow you to use your finance and accounting skills while serving in a more consulting environment (vs. auditing).
