Junior Military Career Placement Firms and Location

Veteran

Brett Bloomquist Tampa, FL

Good Afternoon,
I realize I am a bit tardy to this "party" as work requirements prohibited me from joining earlier. As a Junior Military Officer exploring different options, placement firms are quite appealing to those looking to transition into the civilian world. Does Deloitte work with job placement firms to acquire potential candidates for the company? Additionally, if I may, I am completing my MBA at the University of Florida and my wife would really like to stay in the Tampa Bay area or Florida at the least. Are candidates limited on their location options when applying to Deloitte?

I know that many others have thanked all Deloitte employees for taking time out of their busy schedules to provide industry and company insight. But I wanted to say it again as it is very valuable and greatly appreciated by all. Its is great that Deloitte supports forum participation, especially with Vets!

Hi Brett, have you thought about what specific area(s) in consulting you are interested in? With my firm, we have several primary service areas: Technology, Strategy, and Human Capital. I suggest you look on the Deloitte career page to acquaint yourself with the types of opportunities that you're interested in. Finally, in the consulting field, location is frequently not an issue because you will be traveling to service clients around the country, not going into the office in the city that you reside in. I hope this helps. If you have any more questions, feel free to reach out to me offline. I plan to remain on this chat session until 5pm ET.

Brett, living in the Tampa Bay area I can tell you this is the #1 job market in the state of Florida. Narrowing your search to just one company could hinder your search for suitable employment. I am not saying that Deloitte is a bad company to work for, I think they are a great company that has hired many Veterans and they will continue to do so. There are several reasons to establish a good career with a good company:

1. It may satisfy you personally, in that the conditions of employment are suitable to you.
2. It may satisfy you professionally, in that you are being paid a salary you want AND there
is room of advancement or promotion.
3. It may satisfy your passion, in that you feel your self-worth is satisfied and you are contributing your efforts for the right cause, whether that is you, your family, other
Veterans, homeless, etc.

If you find a position that satisfies at least two out of three of these you are doing fine. I would support you only wanting to work for Deloitte if that is what you truly want to do, but I would also be obligated to advise you to seek out other options. As I tell the transitioning Veterans I counsel, you should always have a contingency plan, or always have a Plan B, Plan C, and in some cases Plan D. If you are interested I do receive information about openings from companies and recruiters that want to hire qualified Veterans. I can be found on MacDill AFB in Building 38.

Brett,
Thank you for your service. I am not from Deloitte, but have many contacts in Tampa. Another industry to consider in Tampa is Life Sciences. Two Pharmaceuticals companies have moved there in the last few years - BMS and Johnson and Johnson. According to the Tampa/St Pete Chamber of Commerce, they are looking to attract more life sciences companies to the area. It may be another area to consider including Deloitte.

Hi Brett,

Thanks for your interest! Typically Deloitte does not use outside search firms, we have an internal recruiting team. I would recommend that you check with your grad school's Career Center to see if Deloitte plans on coming to your campus. That would be a good way to get 'introduced' to the firm.

Additionally, Deloitte's career page has all of our jobs posted and you can search by keyword, geographic location (Tampa), etc. I would encourage you to apply to all jobs that are of interest to you to ensure many recruiters see your information.

I hope this is helpful, good luck!

Hi Brett -

I know a lot of us Deloitte folks are still active - especially those of us from the West Coast - so I don't think you're tardy!

To address some of your questions.

On job placement firms: I'm not from recruiting or Talent (aka HR) so I can't answer 100%. That said I know we source 'experience hires' from many sources, including external recruiting firms, so I suspect we do.

On location: honestly, probably your best route is to go through the campus recruiting in Florida. Will you finish your MBA now or in the fall? Either way, I suspect Deloitte recruits on campus, and your career center on campus can help you learn the schedule. As part of that we definitely ask about location preferences, including whether it's a 'hard' or flexible preference.

Hope that helps!

Theo
