Seeking a non-profit leadership mentor.

Veteran

Matthew Hall Indianapolis, IN

I am a vet and have started a 501c3 NP but I am struggling to wrap my hands around donor acquisition, donor management and grant writing. We have a great product that connects well with possible donors but I am not getting into the correct networking circles to pitch to mid to major donors.

How do I break through the glass ceiling and can anyone help with introductions?

Hi Matthew,

Try googling "resource conservation and development council" for your state. Every state had them until about 7 years ago. They had federal funding, but it dried up. Many RC&Ds, as they are referred to dried up as well, but the successful ones are still doing well. They would be happy to help you and offer ideas. If you don't find any let me know at retiredjeff2012@gmail.com and I will send you the e-mail of a good friend who is retired from the RC&D she worked for, but is still very connected. She built her council into one with a $ 1 million endowment. She also used to teach a grant writing workshop, and still may. Also, there are some good grant writing courses out there, I attended one back in 2003 that was five days long and excellent. Good luck, let me know how it goes or if you need further referrals!

Matthew,
Take a look at The Bridgespan Group (http://www.bridgespan.org/Home.aspx) whose sole focus is on nurturing non-profit organizations; from fund raising and nonprofit strategy, to leadership, seeking a career in the non-profit sector as well as recruiting. It's a really great resource and a good starting point if you haven't already checked it out.

If you message me privately, I can put you in touch with a friend who has started her own successful non-profit and can help answer some of your questions as well.

Cheers,
Brage

Matthew,

Hopefully you are following up with the other comments.
Searching "Indiana" and "non profit training" will also give you some good resources.
Best,
Susana

Matthew,

Love to help but need to know more... Please share your nonprofits URL, mission, vision. That way I might be able to offer specific advice and suggestions that meet your needs. Be good to understand your budget as well or the resources you have available.

Best,

Mike
