There are websites that can help you through the process. Google them for ideas and thoughts. Banks, Wall St Brokerage houses and major companies have positions that would interest you.

Resume preparation is extremely important. A job objective should be included and should be customized; depending upon the job you are applying for. The resume should be brief, and give an employer reasons to hire you. Check carefully for spelling and grammatical errors. I know from experience, the first glance of the person reading your resume will be to find reasons not to hire you. Employers receive hundreds of resumes, and the first screening is to disqualify applicants, so be guided accordingly. The actual search should include contacts that you have developed relationships, and work for a company that you would enjoy working for. Many times it is who you know, not what you know. Corporate websites of large companies, such as Chase Manhattan, Exxon-Mobil, Proctor and Gamble, all post current openings. Head hunters in your field of employment can be found by googling them, and are a good source. There are websites like Monster.com, Salesladders.com, headhunters.com, careerbuilder.com, are another source for leads. If you have other questions, feel free to email me at: yanknole@aol.com. I'd be happy to look at your resume. Sometimes its just a matter of how you list your experience. Send it to tomlinsonjk@aol.com

Dayron,

Start by finding the "finance" resume template from Columbia Business School and revise your resume. Go to LinkedIn and find veterans in the finance industry and network. The email format at most large financial institutions are the same and you can "cold" email veterans. Work the responses and remain persistent with the non responses. Keep the emails concise and to the point. I suggest you look at networking tips and descriptions of the informational interview as a starting point. This approach has been the most successful way to get into the industry. Most importantly, you're past the exploratory stage (internship) so know what you want to do in the industry and connect your previous experience to the reasons you will do well in finance. Have a great 30 second story or elevator pitch. There are many things I could list, but this will turn into an essay.

The job market is tough right now so for every door closed in your face, find another open door.

Thank you Michael and thank you Shawn. I am probably going to be contacting the headhunters because I have been looking since March. Nobody wants to give me a chance and all I want is a foot in the door and then I will take it from there. I will not give up.

I think you should utilize the web. The banking industry, including companies such as Merrill Lynch all have positions in this area as well as commodity and energy companies. There are websites of head huntersthat may be able to help, ie. headhunters.com, theladders.com, wikipedia.org/wiki/headhunters that may have positions. In addition, large companies such as Sears, BP Shell, JP Morgan all post jobs that are open. Your resume should emphasize the leadership and team building strengths that come with time in the military. I would be glad to provide additional assistance. good luck and thank you for protecting our country.

Your resume would be very helpful. I am trying to be a financial analyst or in risk management. I want to do analysis but I don't want to do sales. Any advice would be helpful.
