Position Description

Harvard University Research Computing is looking for an experienced Sr. Systems Engineer to join our Regulated data team and help deploy and maintain a research computing environment using AWS Service Workbench (SWB) and ParallelCluster. This role requires a deep understanding of AWS services, Cloud infrastructure, and HPC environments, as well as expertise in the tools and technologies mentioned below. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background and excellent problem-solving skills, enabling them to assist with the deployment and maintenance of our cloud systems.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Synchronize Active Directory users and groups into AWS IAM Identity Center SSO to streamline identity and access management.
• Clone CodeCommit repositories for seamless code management and version control.
• Manage AWS Landing Zone Accelerator costs, ensuring the project remains within budget.
• Implement AWS Network Firewall best practices to protect and secure the research computing environment.
• Configure Firewall Manager through the Landing Zone Accelerator Config File, ensuring network security and compliance.
• Automate security patching for EC2 instances to maintain a secure and up-to-date environment.
• Implement Security Hub automation recommendations to enhance overall cloud security posture.
• Build versioned type docs locally and maintain up-to-date documentation.
• Upgrade LZA solutions as required to leverage the latest features and enhancements.
• Oversee account bootstrapping steps to ensure a smooth onboarding process for new users.

Additionally, The Senior Systems Engineer will:

Coordinate the planning of and conduct advanced research computing engineering duties to deliver easily accessible and scalable computing resources to professors and students as part of their coursework. Work independently to build, monitor, and maintain the Academic Computing Cluster, Open OnDemand service, and software. Provide technical expertise to teams and projects alongside research programs. Be a key contributor to related projects simultaneously.
University Research Computing provides transformative computing and data services that advance Harvard researchers' impact on addressing society's biggest challenges. This position is also in partnership with Academic Technology units, with the aim to provide research tools and software directly to classrooms.

The successful candidate is exceptionally well-organized, action-oriented, an excellent listener, and thoughtful communicator with a record of demonstrated success communicating effectively across all levels of an organization from entry level staff to University executives and in both technical and nontechnical, business languages.

Basic Qualifications

•Minimum of seven years' post-secondary education or relevant work experience

• 5+ years of experience in cloud systems engineering, with a focus on AWS services and infrastructure.
• Familiarity with AWS Service Workbench (SWB), AWS ParallelCluster, and other relevant AWS services.
• Familiarity with Splunk, CrowdStrike, Tenable Nessus, and HPC environments.
• Experience with AWS security services, including Firewall Manager, Security Hub, and IAM.
• Expertise in scripting languages such as Python, Bash, or PowerShell.
• AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate or AWS Certified SysOps Administrator certification.
• Experience in a research or higher education setting.
• Broad knowledge of the deployment and management of physical and virtual systems (e.g. storage, cluster computing, network, database, applications)
• Experience automating infrastructure with tools like Puppet, Chef, Ansible, or Terraform
• Experience with Slurm Workload Manager, Open OnDemand, operating HPC environments
• Experience with monitoring systems, writing checks, and creating actionable alerting
• Experience with metrics collection to gain insight into production systems
• Experience with Linux system administration, git and version control in general
