About Ryan
I enlisted in the Navy in 1993. I remained on active duty as a Boatswain's Mate Third Class (BM3) until 1995. I continued in the Navy Reserves as a BM2 during college and law school until I was commissioned in the Navy Judge Advocate General Corps (JAGC) in 2001. I began active duty in the Navy JAGC in 2003. During my 17+ years as a Navy JAG, I've served as: a legal assistance attorney; a defense attorney; a trial counsel (prosecutor); a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney in Guam; a legal advisor to a number of Commanding Officers and Admirals; an independent Magistrate in Iraq; a legal advisor to the Afghan National Police in Afghanistan; and the Judge Advocate onboard the USS NIMITZ. During my service I received an LLM. in Environmental and Natural Resources Law and have specialized in environmental compliance. My environmental law experience includes at-sea environmental planning for Navy training and testing, as well as installation environmental compliance for a variety of issues. My current position is Officer in Charge of Naval Justice School Detachment Norfolk where I lead a team of legal professionals who instruct fleet Sailors regarding military justice and legal document processing. I will be retiring from the military service March 31, 2021.
