On Confronting Challenges - The 3 C's: Mental Tai Chi


In times of challenge, one must be agile and resilient. But how?

Be self aware and practice the 3 C's: Mental Tai Chi.

The 3 C's consist of the following practices.

  1. Composure

Take a few breaths. Some may think that you are sighing sometimes. But what you are doing is fortifying yourself to cope when confronting a challenge. These breaths, as little as 3 or 4, will energize your mind, enable you to reduce stress reactions and become calm.

  1. Confidence
    Most of us have been around for a while. We’ve seen, heard and interacted with challenges before successfully. One must therefore believe in their own capacity to be successful based on their own experience in life. Give yourself some credit for what you’ve accomplished already. Be confident, act confident.

  2. Conviction
    I’ve heard this expressed as “not my first rodeo”. One can choose to have the conviction that one has the ability to solve problems. Take the bull by the horns and train the beast. Have conviction and proceed.

These 3 C's are a form that requires constant practice.

It is not always easy to remember to pause for composure. It must become automatic.

To breath consciously is the first step to confronting challenges.

It can be difficult to summon and maintain confidence in the face of uncertainty and complexity. But it helps to be confident.

Conviction is powered by the other C's. It is plugged into them. The Cs work as a virtuous cycle building momentum to carry one forward beyond today’s challenges to tomorrow’s.
