Do you remember the game Operation? Consider A Career As A HIM Professional...

Career Exploration

Do you have a “thirst for knowledge”? Does the study of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology intrigue you? Can you devote long hours and constant practice to improve your skills?

If you answered “yes” to these questions – the Medical Billing and Coding field – just might be a good fit for you. The healthcare arena is constantly changing. These changes have increased the need for professionals that are able to apply rules and regulations to healthcare documentation.

I often watch as nervous students begin a new career path due to many different reasons. I nurture each of them as they struggle to learn the new “language” needed to perfect their “craft”. Baby steps at first – then the constant blossoming a new awareness of the HIM field. Eventually the new found skill of being able to transform words into numbers become a basic part of their job readiness.

If possible, plan to attend local chapter meetings. Meeting attendance will give you a chance to interact with professionals already immersed in the job “culture”. You will meet a number of individuals ready to help. Use this time to develop contacts and expand networking opportunities.

Social forums also provide an opportunity to ask questions. Find out which training program works best for you. Are you able to work on-line? Does a classroom setting appeal to you? Remember these skills will have to be transferred to the coding manuals to be able to pass the rigorous certification examination.

The following sites offer additional information on national certifications: https://www.aapc.com/medical-coding/medical coding.aspx , http://www.ahima.org/careers/healthinfo and http://physicianswebsites.com .

There is information on the national certifications available through AAPC , AHIMA and MAB.

I have a passion for my HIM career. I have the privilege and honor of being able to do a job that I love. Discover your skills and your passion. Once you do – it is no longer a job but, an extension of yourself. Does it get any better than that?
