Looking for a mentor in the Business Analysis Sector who would be willing to help a soon to be-college graduate enter the industry

Veteran

Matt Kinser Westerville, OH

I'm a college senior looking to graduate in Spring 2023 from The Ohio State University with a B.S.B.A in Business Administration w/ Economic Focus. I'm looking to enter the BA sector because it is a solid foundation skills-wise and looks to have a lot of potential for future career growth as you gain more general business process experience.

I'm currently in the process of completing a few soft-skill courses on my own time which include but are not limited to: a SQL coding course and an Agile/Scrum course to develop my resume further.

I'm looking for a mentor who can not only help direct me towards which skills are the most relevant and marketable, but I'm hoping that same mentor can help me enter the job market as well through networking opportunities.

Hi Matt,

Corporate Financial Analysts (FAs) and Business Analysts often play in the same space, sometimes depending on the roles it is hard to distinguish the two. So I have worked with a few BAs directly over my career. Please DM me and I can give you some of my perspective and try and put you in touch with a couple successful ones I know.

thanks!
Mike

Good morning Matt,
Have you ever used LinkedIn to find alums from The OSU? That's a great way to connect with those who have taken the Analyst path and learn from them. Here's the quick steps to find valuable connections who might be mentors: 1) Go to The Ohio State University school page in LinkedIn (not a Group page); 2) you'll find an "alumni" link on the page - click that; 3) Type in Business Analyst or just Analyst in the search box. You should see many results for the Analyst position and might sort among those in your general area as a start. This is a valuable tool that can provide many good options. I hope it's helpful as you prepare for graduation in the spring. Congratulations on that and your service. -Mary B.

Matt,
Have you started any informational interviews with individuals in your chosen career field. This is great way to accomplish both of your desires. Learn the career and also get to understand the market. Research Informational Interviewing, be sure you stay focused on asking about the career and the tasks and skills needed. Also, when you conclude an interview politely ask if they know someone who would be willing to assist you and conduct another. Also join professional groups on LinkedIn and Facebook. Thanks for your service.
