Any Advice For Entering/Starting A Financial Advisor Career?

Veteran

Badi Sheffey Miami, FL

Financial Advisor is a career that I've recently learned about. Any advice as to how to enter, the licensing path/order, etc.? However, I am not interested in those pseudo-scammy programs were you have to sell products to my friends.

I appreciate any advice.

My spouse was a financial advisor and now works at their HQ. It is a tough field as you are generally a contractor (1099 instead of W2), but can be lucrative if you end up deciding it’s a passion. If you’d like to learn more about the field, send me a private message here or on LinkedIn for a couple people I can put you in touch with.

Coming from a financial industry, you would need to get your series 7, 63/65 or 66 and your Life/Health Insurance if by financial you mean stocks, mutual funds, bonds, etc. There are companies that hire veterans and are willing to training while you study for your licenses. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions and I can help guide you if I don't know the answer.

Or you can as another strategy is to Network Using LinkedIn and ask for informational interviews which many people do not use - also connect with me to have access to my network - https://www.linkedin.com/in/garyrossibaldrigecoach/ - I have a multitude of Financial Advisors in my network that would be willing to speak with you.

I’d suggest that you network at the target company or industry. Use LinkedIn to find people already working there and reach out to them. Ask them the process they used to get hired and ask them to help you navigate the hiring process and if they are willing, ask them to submit you as a referral. These activities require much more time on your part but in my opinion would greatly increase your chances for success. Good luck!

While I'm not an expert in the field, many investment companies have training and apprentice programs, so do some research, and choose one that fits your needs. You might start at the processing level as you learn, but the better employers help you prepare for certification and will give you opportunity. For those companies that interest you, talk to the advisors, and see how they feel. Best wishes on that future career.
