Any Marine Biology majors here?

Veteran

Maria Lopez Waipahu, HI

Aloha! I am still serving in Hawaii with this possibly being my last tour before I ETS. I would love to connect with someone who has a potential background in Biology preferably Marine Biology but I know that can be very specific. This is something I have always sought to do but never had the resources or time prior to joining the military. I am currently serving as a 42A (Human Resources) so my military education won't be enough to translate over to the civilian sector. I'd like to get assistance/guidance on what steps to take now before I ETS to ensure I am a valuable asset to the new team and career I will take on. I'd heard on various groups this field is more about connections rather than your degree but I would love to pursue my degree as well. All and any guidance is greatly appreciated!

Maria - Use LinkedIn reach out to others in the industry using a tailored connection request to increase your network and get their advice and counsel. - Network, Network, network till you get into the door - do not forget to craft your 90 second commercial. What else I can also offer is my broad and deep LinkedIn network of business professionals for networking purposes especially informational interviews. Here is my profile to reach out and connect - https://www.linkedin.com/in/garyrossibaldrigecoach/ Wish you the very best. Gary

Maria,
Start searching organizations that would employee marine biologist and start requesting Informational Interviews. Most people are very interested in helping military/veterans about "career" questions. Look up how to conduct Informational Interviews, HireMilitary has a great worksheet. This will lay great ground work for future employment seeking. It is very important to seek the language of people doing the work you wish to do in your new career. Thanks for your service and God Bless.

Probably would be a good idea to set up a profile on LinkedIn. I searched but couldn't find an entry for you there. I've added instructions & links to information & videos for setting up a LinkedIn profile & how to get FREE LinkedIn premium for one year under this section of my EE webpage: http://eehot.com/ee.html#networking
We could then connect on LinkedIn if you want

For training prior to your ETS you should investigate the skill bridge program.
I've added links to information & videos under these sections:
http://eehot.com/ee.html#cool - DOD skill bridge & MOS to civilian keyword translation
http://eehot.com/ee.html#mentoring - see skill bridge network

After ETS you can use the GI Bill or maybe VRRAP to pay for training:
