Career change to oceanography

Veteran

Judd Meng Colorado Springs, CO

Greetings all,

I am currently in the cyber security realm, and i'm pursuing college for an eventual degree in oceanography. Does anybody happen to be in that field, or know anybody who could be a mentor? I know it's a long shot, but I figured I'd ask!

Judd - Jerry is right on - network with individuals in the oceanography field to glean information via tailored connection request - also research companies in the field and find someone - use the heck out of informational interviews - by the way that was my degree out of the Naval Academy, secondly connect with me to broaden your network - https://www.linkedin.com/in/garyrossibaldrigecoach - also check out one of my classmates https://www.linkedin.com/in/philip-renaud-292a336/ - he works at Woods Hole, use my name and he may have some ideas.

Jerry, thank you for the sound advice. I am indeed in the information gathering phase, so searching LinkedIn and facebook professional are good ideas, thanks.

Judd,
Do some searches on LinkedIn by career and reach out based upon their careers and see if the would just do an Informational Interview. It would be helpful to find out what the career field is like and what is done on a day to day basis. Facebook professional also has groups by profession. Informational Interviewing would give you a an idea of what the career is like. ACP may also help provide a mentor.
It is important to know and understand the career, and people do try to assist military, just stay on the seeking information path. Some folks ask way too soon about work, when if you seek information. Thanks for your service.
