Tailoring Resume Help

Veteran

Joe Hetrick Winter Garden, FL

First off, thank you to all the mentors who volunteer at ACP, I am thankful. I am looking for assistance in tailoring my resume. I have what I considered a fairly tailored resume for a specific field but have received some great guidance that more tailoring is needed. I am struggling to extrapolate my military experience and convert it to civilian skills and attributes. I do have a job announcement that I am aligning my resume to.

I am asking others for any resources or anyone that would review my resume and be able to provide feedback on how to accomplish this.

Please let me know if anyone can help me out.

Thank you all – Joe

Hello Joe,

Translating your resume to 'civilian speak' was one of the biggest challenges I had, and adding verbiage and data to get the attention of corporate HR and getting through the automated filters. Despite not making money, we (as military members) still have a wealth of information that we can show on cost savings, personnel savings, process improvements, etc.

I have reviewed several of past and present teammates' resumes based on feedback I have received, happy to share that knowledge if you want it.

Send me a text at 402-297-6949 and we can establish a time to discuss and share information.

Joe,
The first question is what career are you heading into. Looking at your LinkedIn profile, you are listed as an Army Officer. Keep in mind that first TAG line and you introduction are the key search parameters for recruiters. Having a resume, with out anyone seeing what career you are heading into will be difficult.
Start conduction some informational interviews in your selected career, join groups on LI and Facebook professions, exchange comments, ask questions. Pick up an advisory from ACP. Then once you have determined the career and what "they" want your resume will be tailored to match the position opening. Hire Heroes USA is great with resume help, but again they will push you for a career to tailor that resume to. Keep in mind, your resume should read like the best job opening description you can find on Indeed etc. That is what recruiters are looking for, they will not translate your military experience into the civilian counter part, you do have some civilian experience, great use that to bounce from. Connect with Michael Quinn on LinkedIn, he provides clinics on networking also pick up and ACP mentor they help ton. This is a short read. . Remember that you are part of the 0.5% of Americans who serve their country. You are very well respected, but the chance civilians have been part of the 0.5% simply means they will not understand your language or experiences-without translation. Thank you for your support and sacrifices. God Bless https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/come-prepared-transition-process-gap-between-civilian-jerry-welsh/

Hello Captain Hetrick. I put together a document for military folks transitioning to civilian jobs, that walks discusses how to create general resumes, and then resumes that are 'targeted' for specific jobs. It also discusses how to 'commercialize' or 'civilianize' a resume. I will be glad to share it with you, just message me requesting it. I think this it is almost exactly what you are looking for.

Thanks for your service and good luck,
Joe
