I am a veteran Naval Submarine Officer seeking to enroll in a Master's program in Computer & Electrical Engineering to Focus on Machine Learning starting Fall 2022. My background includes a Chemical Engineering B.S. from University of Florida 2011 and a Naval Nuclear Engineering Certification with applicable graduate credits from the Naval Postgraduate School.
Grades for your BS are behind you. So, most in your hand in essays, which convey who you are and what makes you qualified for the top and college. Maybe do some Udemy/Coursera on same topic and mention desire to level up and so on. Weave a compelling story that they would want you
I echo the previous answers.
My additional thoughts would be that you need to answer the question "Why do you want to pursue this?" clearly. Show how the work you have done motivates this goal. You probably have worked on systems that could be improved by the application of Machine Learning. Give some examples.
Also, you said "Computer & Electrical Engineering to Focus on Machine Learning ".
EE is pretty different from Machine Learning. Which one do you want? You should be clear.
As a mechanical engineer (vs. EE or CE), I wish I had more to add than just the following.
At a high level, given 1) you have an undergraduate degree in engineering, and 2) were involved in very technical work in your military career, I suspect you will be a very strong candidate for an engineering masters degree. The former shows you have the aptitude for the field, and the latter shows you know how to put it into practice.
I bet these will help your application stand out and rise to the top for whatever program you choose to pursue.
Best Wishes, Paul
Thank you for your question! Have you narrowed down your list of desired universities to attend? I would take a look at all of the admissions requirements for each of your top picks and start from there.
Additionally, I would also reach out to the point of contact for Graduate Admissions or the Department Head for your intended program at each of your top picks to set up a meeting to discuss what you can do to enhance your application further. The contact information for these individuals (university email address and office number) is usually provided on the school's website.
