Is my resume filled with too much/irrelevant information?

Veteran

Justin Duval North Las Vegas, NV

I joined the military straight out of high school so I don’t have much (any) experience at writing a resumé. I’ve created a cover letter and resumé but I personally feel like it’s a bit wordy. If anyone would like to give me some feedback it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Thanks for your service! For your general resume, you'd probably want to list all Air Force experiences and training / certifications.

When you send your resume to a specific potential employer, tailor your resume to that job description. For example, if you're applying for a stand alone IT specialist position at a small company where you'll work more or less on your own, list how your jobs in the USAF required using certain software programs up front. Add information further down regarding leadership and logistics.

If you're applying for a management position where you'd lead a team, you'd want to show your leadership experiences and training up top, and mention IT and logistics further down.

Try to use the exact words from the job description, too: Many companies use software that scans the resume before a human sees it: if the job description says "experience with Microsoft Excel" and your resume states "Familiar with most software," a Human Resource manager might never read your resume.

Good luck!
