IBM Associate Offering Manager Program Advice

Veteran

Joshua Dunne Scottsdale, AZ

Hello IBM Advisors!

Firstly, thanks for volunteering as a mentor for ACP! Please excuse my previous inquiries as this is my first time using the platform and wasn't aware that this is the place to post questions.

I am looking for advice to learn more about the associate offering manager program, and steps to be able to make myself more marketable for this position.

I have prior software product experience and am working on completing my second masters degree (MBA and MS in User Experience). I would love to hear your thoughts on what else I could possibly do to attract a recruiter for this role. I feel like I would be a great fit and provide value in this position.

Thanks so much for your time!

Hello Joshua. I'm also new to this platform, so we're in this together!

I'm currently working as an Offering Manager at IBM in Private Cloud IaaS. I don't know very much about the AOM program, since I came in directly to an OM position. I'm happy to discuss some questions you have.

I took the same path as Brian into the AOM program (in fact he helped me get in!)... I agree that it is a great way to get your foot in the door here. I did learn recently that it has become more competitive recently so apply early and network extensively!

Josh...please feel free to send me an email with a link to the position you are interested in (jwoodwar@us.ibm.com). Often times external job postings are 'sanitized' and don't contain the details that would be differentiating for you to leverage. My experience in making the transition from Military to Industry is the importance of leveraging your network. In the case of a job-posting only that may be difficult. Let's see if we can work together to get some more info.

Hi Joshua,

First off, thank you for your service. It seems like this is a Product Management role. If this is a career you'd like to pursue, you might want to get certified in product management. There are some options here: https://theproductcompany.com/product-management-certification/. Also, I would highly recommend having your resume submitted by someone within the company. Often internal submissions are looked at first, or carry more weight. I'd suggest looking at LinkedIn to connect with someone, or look in LinkedIn for an internal recruiter at the company. Their job is to find candidates, so you will be helping them, and it will count as an internal submission. Hope that helps.

I transitioned into the AOM program. I am more than willing to chat offline. The AOM program is a great way to get your foot in Big Blue's door. From what I can tell, you would be a great candidate. They hire for this program twice a year. Fall start in Jan and Spring to start in July.
