Facilities Management

Veteran

Does IBM hire facility managers & pubic works personnel directly? Or do you subcontract that out to other companies for your buildings & campuses?

Are there any other positions with IBM that you think I might be eligible or make the transition?

Will you be presenting information regarding employment with IBM (benefits, general compensation packages, focus areas, etc) today? Or is there another way I can find out that information?

Hi Franklin- I'm in IBM Procurement and can confirm that the vast majority of our facilities and property management work is outsourced to global property management suppliers. These suppliers further outsource some of the services to third parties, such as cafeteria, building maintenance, security, etc. We have a few IBMers on our larger sites to manage things overall, but much of it is done by our external business partners. I imagine that many other Fortune 500 companies have similar arrangements, so if you want to seek a role in Facilities management, I would start with companies like Cushman & Wakefield, CBRE, etc.

IBM also markets software that supports Facilities Management and Public Works organizations. If you've worked with NAVFAC, you may be familiar with the IBM Maximo solution. The Air Force uses IBM TRIRIGA in a similar way. Experience working with software that supports Asset and Facilities Management can provide you an avenue to job opportunities at a variety of organizations depending on any specialized experience within public works (e.g. wastewater treatment) and desired location.

Hey Franklin! I can speak for the office here in Houston. The IBM office downtown leases a portion of the building. The team that handles cleaning, sanitation, etc is contracted by the building ops team. However, we do have a "building manager" that is employed by IBM that coordinates things with us like parking updates, badge access, and things like that. To answer your question, I believe it's part of the lease agreement that owner's of the building have with the people leasing.

Hi Franklin, IBM has numerous types of building mostly offices and data centers throughout the world and most of the facility management / work efforts are done by our Core Suppliers (subcontractors). We do have a Procurement commodity area that supports facilities where your expertise could be very useful in selecting, contracting with or working with our suppliers. Our IBM job website would be the place to investigate that potential.

Varies from site to site, but in general, IBM doesn't own many of the buildings it occupies anymore. Most of the facilities management is outsourced locally except a few interface rolls for each site.

I believe IBM sub-contracts those roles to other companies.

Wow - Thanks so much for the range of answers. Yes, I am familiar with Maximo and TRIRIGA. Would definitely be curious about those potential opportunities, so I will look on the IBM web site. I will also investigate those other companies mentioned to see how they support any clients that lease their facilities. Thanks so much for the many answers!!
