Requesting advice on a Bootcamp program in Data Science, Software Engineerring or Software development.

Veteran

Tito Roy Olympia, WA

I would like to pursue a Bootcamp program in Data Science, Software Engineering or Software development. I have been studying python programming using online resouces. I am learning and enjoying it. My python level is intermediate to advance. I have a Bachelor of Science in Textile Technology degree, completed 24 credit hours towards MBA, minor in Accounting. I am good at Accounting and Finance, but I am afraid that without any experience in the field, It will not be easy to get Accounting and Finance jobs. I am 52 years old. Therefore, I am not interested in completing my MBA or Accounting degree. I served in the US Army as a CH 47 helicopter repairer for eight years. I have been working as a Linguist. but I would like to change career to IT.

I will use VET TEC program or GI bill benefit for the Bootcamp program. Could any of you advice me a/ a few good bootcamp programs with their quality ratings and success history such as placement rate and quality of teachings and curriculum. I live in Olympia, WA, but I am ready to move for a suitabe program where I will be able to learn and prepare myself for a new career.

I would also recommend looking at Udemy (https://www.udemy.com) as they have a lot of low cost courses as well covering a vast array of topics. What's nice is that you can preview some of the courses and see the trainer's "style" to find one that fits in with your way of learning. These courses are generally taught by people who work in these fields and all the ones I've gone through give you additional insights into some of the "lesson's learned" and their ideas on best practices as well. Good luck!

Good Morning Tito,

Look into the Microsoft Software and Systems Academy. This program is specific to transitioning veterans. They provide employment at the end upon completion of your certification and training or set you up with success with another employer.

Let me know if you have questions.

Hi Tito-
Thanks for your service! I did an extensive search of data science certificate programs this past spring and chose the IBM Data Science Professional program from Coursera. I was able to get my Data Science Foundations Certificate for FREE - no cost - because I completed the program within the 7 day trial period. Even if I hadn't completed it in 7 days, it only costs $39 / month. Here is the link: https://www.coursera.org/professional-certificates/ibm-data-science

This article in CIO Magazine was a key reason for my decision: https://www.cio.com/article/3222879/15-data-science-certifications-that-will-pay-off.html#:~:text=IBM%20Data%20Science%20Professional%20Certificate%20The%20IBM%20Data,learning%20and%20a%20final%20applied%20data%20science%20capstone.

There are also some specific programs for Veterans that you might want to check out:
Amazon AWS: https://aws.amazon.com/education/awseducate/veterans/
Veterans Who Code: https://vetswhocode.io/
Operation Code: https://www.operationcode.org/

Good luck and thanks again!
