Evolution of Big 4 firms work environments

Veteran

Thomas Sklodowski Olympia, WA

Hello, I haven't considered a Big 4 firm until recently in my career exploration because of the reputation I remember as an undergrad back in 2000's. At the time, incoming graduates were seen as paper pushers due to the incredible increase in regulation following the recession. Obviously, things are much different now, but I would like to hear more about how things have changed and are changing at places like Deloitte and what makes them a good match for veterens in particular.
Thanks

Hi Thomas -

Thank you for your question! I think any answer given will have some level of personal opinion - what I love about Deloitte may be different from someone else at another firm or even someone else at Deloitte. With that said, I'll try to make my answer as universal as possible.

Yes, I think both the industry and companies have changed substantially. As Shetal mentioned, previously it was a fairly common assumption that Big 4 companies were "just accounting firms." Now, the services that Deloitte, and companies like Deloitte, provide have expanded so much. For additional research reference for you if you want it - Sasha Dunwody posted a number of Deloitte position descriptions under the Jobs tab, including Accounting, but also positions within IT Cyber Security and Risk Management, Strategy & Analytics, Human Capital, Systems Engineering, so many different fields. That is where I believe the opportunity comes in, both for veterans looking for positions in those areas, but also opportunity for Deloitte to provide a wide set of services to our clients to really meet their needs.

Further on that, my personal opinion of Deloitte, which I'm sure other companies are this way as well - is that I really like and appreciate the focus on continuous improvement in all of these areas, especially through research and innovation. Being able to take a challenge faced by a number of clients and come up with new tools or methods to address those problems to constantly make things more efficient or more effective is what I think companies should strive for.

I hope this helps, and thank you for your service and participation with us!

Hi Thomas,
First, thank you for your service. I also never considered a Big 4 firm before coming to Deloitte and that was due to my perception of these firms at that time as well. Quite frankly, I was in the legal field prior to Deloitte and my eyes really opened up to the diverse offerings and capabilities of the Big 4-the evolution of these firms to go beyond being known as "just accounting firms". Also, being an Army spouse-I've seen first-hand the invaluable leadership/management skills gained from a military career and these skills are applicable to any career at Deloitte.
