No luck finding a job

Veteran

Jamesetta Palmer Columbia, SC

I seem to not have any luck finding a job right now, I don't know if it's due to COVID or what, I just recently graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Human Resource Management. Does anyone know what I can do, I have been applying like crazy, I am looking for jobs in the Columbia, Charlotte, or Augusta, GA area.

Hi Jamesetta,

Have you joined AUSA? It's a good place to connect with Army Veterans who may know of openings that fit your education and training.

Hi Jamesetta-
Thanks for your service!
I checked out your Linked In profile to get more info on your background.
You're right - COVID is having an impact on businesses right now - so your plans to get into an HR career may have to go on pause until things get back to normal. For people like yourself who have a diverse background and multiple skills, I recommend trying to find a job that highlights your many talents. For example, with your background as a medical assistant, and you education in HR, you should try checking into jobs that are hot right now due to COVID and need BOTH of these skills: contact tracing. Check for jobs in this field in your desired geographic area (but I believe you will find that most of these jobs can be performed virtually from anywhere). Keep searching for opportunities in your desired career field of HR but use the current situation's job demands and your multiple, applicable skills to find a job that fills a need in the meantime. Good luck!
Deb

Hey Jamesetta,

That is an excellent question. If you are looking for a Government job in HR, then usajobs.gov is for you. It is important that you have keywords in your resume, that will resonate with a recruiter. Personally I have used this site twice, and both times it took several months to start getting referrals and ultimately, interviews. I believe that the COVID environment definitely has a impact on the ability to find a job. Sometimes, you need to go where the job is located, in other words as mentioned by another response, widen your available cities/states that you would move too. Also, volunteering is often a bridge to a paying job. All the best to you! Stay positive!

Best,
Tim

Jamesetta - agree with both Francis and Rex. Here is a process that I use with my clients, since you desire to be in HR, start with that and identify the specific industry that you desire to explore - I usually have my clients id 3 industries - that make you excited - then id 10 - 15 companies per industry that gives you 30 to 45 companies - prioritize them from 1st to 45th; next either on LinkedIn or other resources (google, Hoovers, Indeed, glassdoor, company website) try to id the hiring manager or influential in the company to request a informational interview to gain advice, information or counsel - doing this you may just get a position - this uses networking to get a position - networking is the #1 way to find a position. Connect with me on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/garyrossibaldrigecoach/. Sincerely, Gary

I'm sure the virus does have an impact currently, however you really need to be doing as much networking as you can and have your Resumes/Cover Letters, that are being submitted match what the organizations are looking for. Also do not limit the kinds of organizations you are looking at. Every Organization has some semblance of Human Resources so as long as you do not limit what you are looking at - there are opportunities!

If you would like - I would be happy to review your Resume and Cover Letter and help you look. I do live in the area you are looking.

Broaden your geographic hunt. Check with USAA in San Antonio. Do not limit yourself to HR. How about a position in Procurement/supply side?
