Computer Skills

Veteran

Zaneta Shaw Morrow, GA

The supply chain industry keeps track of the location of its products using various computer programs. None of which students learn to navigate in real time. Therefore, my resume is lacking experience with any of the programs used regularly in the field. 1). How can I gain experience with the programs? 2) How is the lack of experience affecting my chance of a good position?

Fair callout and concerns. I’ve learned that direct experience with a given tool or process is nice to have (and sometimes needed) but adjacent experience can also be beneficial and worthwhile talking about. In this example, try focusing on what you have in common with a given tool, process, scenario and how you’ve learned to navigate through complexity vs. why things aren’t a 1:1 fit. In reality, things change just as tools get updated and circumstances evolve. However, if you can at least do some basic research around key concepts for a given program then you’re minimally positioned to have a somewhat meaningful discussion, so you at least manage for being viewed as capable.
