Level of qualifications matching and equivalent experience for position announcements?

Veteran

Matthew Chafin Owings, MD

Raytheon Team,

I am very interested in entering the Aerospace & Defense industries post-retirement, but have difficulty in determining if my background would be competitive for a position within organizations such as yours. Aside from easy to interpret qualifications (e.g., specific certification or degree requirements), what positions or fields within this industry should those of us who may not have an engineering/highly technical background be looking for? Using my specific case as an example, my background is primarily in operations centering around security programs, law enforcement, and the supervision of personnel and teams to accomplish those duties. Thank you for your time.

You might try looking for Industrial Security positions.

I agree with Denton's answer - I think that your skillset could enable you to work in the security area in industry. Particularly in major sites, that could range from physical site security, access control, information system security, special access programs, and other areas. For smaller sites often all of those roles are filled by one or two people, so lots of challenges either way.

Matthew,

First let me thank you for your service. Your skill set centering around operations within security is highly sought after. Something you may consider, is looking in the National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual (NISPOM), as it is more industry based vs. DOD (or military) based. You will see by going through that manual, a great deal of your experience transfers into the security requirements established by the DOD and Government respectively.
