I've thoroughly enjoyed my time at NIH as a program and communications manager, but I am ready for my next challenge. I feel the private sector would satisfy my desire to grow and expand my career possibilities. I am curious about others' experiences as a contractor or consultant. Where are the best companies to work for and why? I live in the DC/Baltimore area, so naturally I'm looking for organizations in those locations.

This is definitely a big question. I have spent my entire career recruiting in the government contracting space. As Deb mentions, deciding whether you want to work for a small or larger business is a good starting point. Like anything, there are pros and cons to both.
Personally, I've found my home with a large contractor with a variety of roles in the DC/Baltimore area. Competitive benefits, high visibility, and most importantly an enormous amount of room for growth. If you'd like to know more, I'd be glad to assist.

Some general advice: the differences between small businesses and large businesses are huge. I recommend you consider which size company you want to work in. If culture is important to you, then chances are a smaller business will be true to its core values and treat you more like family. If you are more comfortable with bureaucracy and structure, then you may be more comfortable in a larger business.
