Looking to Transition into the Tech Industry, especially in the Austin, TX area

Veteran

Andrew Tyndall Deridder, LA

I have a pretty varied background both before and during the military, but all non-technical. I'm really interested in learning how to apply those skills into the tech industry, especially in a cross-functional environment. I have a PMP certification and am studying for a Agile certification.

Hello, Andrew

First of all and most importantly, thank you for your service.

If you are interested in getting into a technical field and want to explore possibilities I would join technical organizations who represent engineers, technicians and the like and usually have monthly meetings, events and conventions in your local cities. I would think New Orleans has such organizations. Then you can attend their meetings and network. I would also reach out to technical skills-focused universities--like Georgia Tech--and get an informational interview with their Deans or professors and find out what types of technical organizations or companies that their students are getting internships or jobs at and pursue those avenues. My son took a similar route, got an internship at a Japanese semiconductor company and now works in Seattle at the corporate headquarters of Amazon as a logistics expert for small businesses.

Good luck with your search and much success in your career.

I would suggest you check out https://www.americaninno.com/austin/guides-austin/. It is a website that showcases the recruiting scene in the Austin area, mostly in the tech arena. Heather is correct about LinkedIn. Get on it and flesh out your profile. Make sure your degrees and certifications are identified. Have a professional looking picture. Thank you for your service and good luck.
