How to make my resume stand out

Veteran

Monique Anderson Schertz, TX

With everyone of us looking for almost the same job and having our military back ground behind all of us, how do I stand out from the rest.

Hi Monique,

Thank you so much for posting your question on ACP AdvisorNet!

Writing an effective resume that stands out can be so difficult, so just know you're not alone. Without knowing what specific field(s) you're applying for, here's some general advice on writing a solid resume more likely to get attention:

Since your resume and cover letter are your first impression on an employer, it is important to make sure you're selling yourself effectively and highlight skills hiring managers are most looking for. That said, your resume shouldn't be too general as when your skills appear too broad, sometimes hiring managers feel they cannot get a good sense of who you are and what you bring to the table. All job postings tell you exactly what qualities the position requires, so do your best to tailor your resume around the skills you possess that match-up with the position you're applying for.

Here is a really interesting and comprehensive article about what soft skills to highlight on your resume: https://www.thebalancecareers.com/list-of-soft-skills-2063770

Additionally, this forum is an excellent way to have your resume reviewed and critiqued in order to make it stronger. Feel free to post a question on here asking if someone would be willing to look your resume over and provide feedback on ways it could be improved. I would recommend you head over to our Community Feature: https://acp-advisornet.org/community/advisors where you can find advisors in your career field to review your resume and provide industry-specific advice.

I hope this helps! Please feel free to reach out if you have any additional questions.
