How do I find the job I’m looking for?

Veteran

Jkeonye Rose Cordova, TN

I am currently a stay at home spouse but I am looking for a job part time in the marketing social media field. My goal is to be able to bring in income and learn at the same time. Since I am still in school, I’m finding it difficult for anyone to want to take me on.

Thank you guys so much for responding! I went ahead and filled out an application for a PR internship but I was denied. I have been a little down about it but I will continue the search and see what I can find.

Jkeonye: Find an employer that excites your creative juices. Aim for the employer with that "dream job". Find out who is doing your dream job in that organization. Call them and ask for a meeting with the premise that you would like to interview them as part of your school program. Almost everyone likes to talk about them self and mentor those who are interested in what they are doing at work. Let your excitement shine through. Offer to work for free. Then negotiate it into a paid internship as the opportunity arises. I bet that within a year you'll be well on your way to sitting in their chair. With your great personality and drive to succeed, you'll be where you ultimately want to be in short order.

If you already have some experience (or have a pretty good idea of what you'd do regarding social media marketing), then doing freelance work could be a good part-time option, as most places I'm aware of generally want someone full-time.

A website like upwork.com could be a good place to start.

Jkeonye,
If you are in school and looking to break into a new field, one of the best things you can do is Intern for a company that does what you want to do. Once you have some time in an internship, it is easier to pick up an entry level position. I did a quick search on Indeed.com for social marketing internships and found a few. You can also look at companies that are near you that have a strong social marketing presence. Look up their head of social marketing on LinkedIn and contact them about the possibility of an internship.

Hi Jkeonye, thank you for your question!

Doing one of these things remotely: working/education will help you save time, money, and allow you to do both! If you're currently in a physical classroom space for school, definitely search for remote work. Here is an article about career portability that might give you some ideas and insight: https://acp-advisornet.org/articles/729/cultivating-career-military-spouse. Also check out the website Flexjobs.com––lots of work from home opportunities to be found there!

Once you finish school, or even this semester, you might consider switching and taking classes online and working in a physical workspace.
