Dear Chancey,

If you are looking for a job, from which to retire, you may want to consider a Federal position.

For starters, your military time would qualify you for four weeks of annual leave per year, plus 10 Federal holidays. Additionally, the government pays about 72-74% of your medical insurance—for you, your spouse, and any eligible family members (adopted kids, for example.) And you have the option to keep the health benefits when you retire. The premium remains the same as if you were still working.

The government has a Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) (similar to a civilian 401K) and will contribute up to 5% in matching funds, or an automatic 1% with no matching funds from you. You can retire at age 62 with five years of Federal service (not including military) and receive a pension based on the number of years of service, times the average of your highest three consecutive years of salary, times 1%. It’s not going to be a huge sum, but the general concept is that your total retirement package is made up of your pension, the money in your TSP, and your Social Security.

Your six years in the military can be counted in your retirement calculation if you “buy them back”. In other words, you did not contribute to a Federal pension plan while in the military, but you now have the opportunity to make up for that amount if you want your six years to be added to your Federal time and included in your pension calculation. The option is yours, and once you know the amount, you can even elect a payroll deduction, over a number of years.

All Federal jobs are listed in www.usajobs.gov. And if you decide to go this route, please remember that Federal résumés are very different than civilian résumés. Unfortunately, I did not see any Federal job announcements within 25 miles of Osage Beach; however, a number of jobs showed up when I increased the range to 40 miles.

Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions.

Good luck, and thank you for your Service!

Sincerely,
Bob Jurasek

Chancy,
Do you a career field in mind? Have you looked into creating a LinkedIn profile? Both of those will be a must in a career search today. 90+% of the hiring managers today use LinkedIn and when searching for candidates they narrow it down by the career. While 6 years in not career it does provide amble experience to at least narrow the search. Here is an article on things to list and things to try and stay away from. Thanks for your service. God Bless. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/linkedin-profile-transitioning-service-members-portal-jerry-welsh/
