Hello ,

My background is in Engineering but I want to get a job in Finance industry. I am not looking for a technical role. I am open for a entry level job.

Hi Saurabh,

I've met several folks in Finance who have an engineering background, a lot firm view this type of education and training highly valuable. However, I would start by targeting what role within the finance sector you'd like to do. Finance is a very broad industry and could be anything from a bank teller or a portfolio manager at an asset management firm. Also, what do you mean by non-technical role? Once you have defined that I think you'll have a better idea which direction you need to go. Networking, internships, and other former education will help towards that goal. Certificates are can be helpful too (CPA, CFP, CFA, CAIA, etc).

Also, get good at spreadsheets most finance roles will require this depending on the position. From my experience, my spreadsheets skills have helped me succeed.

Best of luck,
Jonathan

I would suggest that you start attending finance related events to meet people and tell them your story. That’s what I did and it worked for me. I hope this helps.

If you have additional questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

One of the great things about BP is that we are always looking for diverse qualified employees! I am an engineer currently working in BP's trading arm. One of the great programs we have which I would suggest you look into (and see if there are other companies who have similar programs) is our military placement program here in trading. There are a lot of finance opportunities. We have currently closed applications this year but I would keep an eye on it. https://www.bp.com/en/global/bp-careers/working-at-bp/our-businesses/supply-trading.html

Look at what type of engineering skills you have that would be transferrable to an entry level finance role. Look at Finacial Analyst, General Ledger Account, Budgeting, Planning. Consider getting your MBA which will give you more access to these roles than just your Engineering degree. Anything you did in the Army that was finance related, include that experience.
