Private Equity funds will sometimes recruit from consulting firms. This will often depend upon the consulting firm and the group.

A somewhat new trend in Private Equity is that many funds have begun to build out operational resource teams in-house to assist with both pre-acquisition due diligence and with post-acquisition portfolio company oversight. This trend is likely to continue, so I believe there will be more opportunities for consultants to make the move over to PE. I'm not sure how the consultant hiring world works, but once you have secured a consulting job and have put some experience under your belt, I would begin to reach out to Recruiters - Amity Partners, Ratio Advisers, CPI, Glocap, to name a few. They are the gatekeepers to PE hiring.

I will tell you, however, that this move to PE is much easier at an earlier point in your career, but that doesn't mean it is impossible. Most firms will look favorably upon military service, but the requisite experience and ability to add-value comes first and foremost. So make sure you are prepared in the event you do get an interview as case studies and highly technical questions are the norm - especially as you move up the ladder.
