What recommendations do you have to translate military roles and responsibilities to our civilian counterparts?

Veteran

KARA GORMONT Honolulu, HI

We often here when discussing what we do with civilian organizations that our roles of flight commander, squadron commander, group commander, division director, do not translate well to their organizational structure. How do we portray the leadership experiences in the military to better align with our civilian counterparts?

Kara,

Thank you for your service. One way to increase your communication is to focus on leading organizations in your area of expertise. Many times when I interview folks that are veterans, I am listening for how they identified strategic goals and met the challenges. I am open to connecting with you via Zoom to chat.

Kara I think your LinkedIn profile does an excellent job in transferring your experience. Healthcare management is healthcare management-outside of the fact you did not have to struggle with reimbursement from third party payers. Take much of what you accomplished, provide #$%, and you should be very marketable. The only area you may not have experience at the CEO level would be Board management. I had an exec TAP workshop at Rock Island where I had 12 light and full birds in the workshop-I did receive a coin for trying to keep them in control for 3-days. There were some very interesting discussions among the participants about Board management skills. Speaking from my experience as a CEO, I attended Board meetings for 15 years prior to becoming the CEO and then it was a steep learning curve. You may want to look in the V or C suite underneath the CEO or COO for that Board experience. Also watch the 22 years of experience. With your education and executive level experience, if they want 10 years, you have 10+. Education and experience at the 20 year level would scare a number of employers off due to required $$. The O-6 level outside of healthcare is difficult to role into corporate positions, I believe you need to market your value as a highly skilled healthcare executive, use your ACHE membership to start networking. You bring a ton of healthcare experience, drop the military terms and use patient count, visits, other healthcare statistics-versus Wing. Reach out to American Corporate Partners for a mentor, they will match you up with a healthcare exec to assist in mentoring your. The article I am attaching should help with your LI profile. Also take a look at some of the posts on my profile, I always pass on transition experts articles. Thank you for your dedication and sacrifices made and congrats on O-6!
