How can you get civilian employers to understand your leadership capabilities garnered through your military experience?

My fear is that my military background is in security, but I don't particularly want to be stovepiped into that same profession on the civilian side. My educational background is a mixture between law enforcement and human resources. However, what I really want employers to understand is that what I really did was lead people and dealt with issues like motivation, retainment, talent management, goal setting, standards setting, evaluations, etc.

Have you ever considered a career in management consulting? Management consulting firms look for people who can bring value to their clients across a wide range skillsets. Additionally, they typically enable their professionals to move laterally within the firm as they move vertically through their career. This allows management consulting professionals to avoid being "stovepiped", as you mentioned in your question.

I guess the question goes back to what do you want to *do*. I've been out for almost 4 years, but I don't think I can ever recall seeing a job posting, looking for a generic leader. What they are looking for is a leader with skills in a specific area. Whether that's security, HR, whatever.

What kind of a team do you want to lead? What industry do you want to work in? Once you figure that out, start looking on job boards to see if the kind of job you're looking for exists, and what the minimum qualifications are.
