The background of my question comes from my 19+ years of Active Duty Army service and being that the IT world is very broad. I will transition from the military on JUN 2021 but I will begin 24 months prior on utilizing all the transitioning programs in place. I love Information Technology , Managing/Leading Teams , Organizing Projects , and just helping people. I'm have trouble finding a job to focus on that gathers all above in one. My target area of job location is Central Texas (Austin/Ft. Hood Area) but open to other locations. I have obtained SEC+ and NET+ certifications and also have an active TS-SCI clearance. Great to see you planning early for your transition. The great news is your experience is easily transferable to the commercial work space. As you start to think about your transition, it is good to think big to small.
- Do you want a corporate roll or a consultant type roll?
- Company type: Small; regional; national; or global company
- Industry vs location
These are probably things that you may not even know how to wrap your head around yet.
Since you already live near where you want lo work post retirement, now is the time to build that network. I recommend joining some IT centric networking groups in the Austin area. Also, start compiling a list of the in the Austin area that might interest you. Then use LinkedIn to find people at those companies with similar backgrounds that you can connect with. The sooner you start having informational discussions with people, the more of them you can have, the more you will be top of mind when they have a need.
