CTO - Where is the balance between Management and Technical?

Veteran

What are some of the focus points that CTO's are educating themselves on (management and/or technical) to help keep them moving forward in their careers? What do you determine is a good balance between the two?

Hi Nick. We just hired a CTO. We found a "player/coach" that was perfect for our needs. As a small business, we were not looking for someone to man a help desk or someone to hold months of strategy meetings...but rather someone that understood our industry and the tech products required to thrive within it. Our CTO started by assessing what we had, determining if it was the right stuff in the right amounts, and rapidly set up a strategy to get us where we needed to be. The details of each installation and integration was his to manage but not his to perform. We now know where our next $XX,XXX will be invested in tech at all times. I think a medium or large company may have very different expectations of a CTO. I hope this helps.
