How can I get a job working from home or even an office doing social media management, digital marketing, web design, etc?

Veteran

ANDREW DRAKE Canton, GA

I am looking to change jobs from a police officer to the tech world. I would love to develop web pages, build social media pages and communities, the market for various companies on the internet using social media etc. I am just lost on how I actually get experience or training in one of the above-listed fields to obtain a job.

I have done some research and a lot of people say you have to build a portfolio but I am not sure on how to do that when I am working full time. Isn't there a college or online program where I can get a certification or something that way I can look more appealing to tech companies.

I would love to work from home but I know that is not always an option.

Jobs I would love to have:
social media manager
digital marketing
affiliate marketing
web design

Your LinkedIn profile does not do you justice if you are seeking positions in social media manager, digital marketing, affiliate marketing, web design. I am sending you an article on profiles. Literally your picture, TAG line, and summary will be about as far a most companies go with their search engines. If you look at my profile you will find that further down my profile I worked 31 years in a much different career, now I receive at least 10 inquiries a week for profile reviews and transition questions. If you Google Jerry Welsh veteran transition I am on first page. While it never was or is my goal to be listed on Google-it shows you how search engines work-as someone seeking a career in part of that field, do yourself a favor and get your new career interest at the top of your profile-there are no laws that mandate what you list first, second etc. it is all about being found. 90% of recruiters use LinkedIn to search for job applicants. Thank you for your service and God Bless. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/linkedin-profile-your-chance-discovered-transitioning-jerry-welsh/

Hello,

I'd be more than happy to help. This is what I do and learned everything myself.

1. As for web design, you do not need to code to do it. If you learn WordPress, you can build a basic website and add layout design by using Page Builders like Elementor. It is very fulfilling. Learn basic WordPress here:

Apply as a freelancer site such as Upwork.

2. As for affiliate marketing, it helps if you have a website first. So we go back to #1. Then apply as affiliate in popular affiliate programs like ShareASale, Rakuten,Jvzoo,, or Clickbank. The commissions vary from product to product. Once you have been approved, you can start promoting products that you are an affiliate of.

3. Social Media Marketing - you can learn a lot for free on Youtube. For FB Ads which can be complicated, best you find the free youtube tutorial by Kevin David..

4. Digital Marketing is never complete without Search Engine Optimization. If you want to learn that, here is a basic intro

Feel free to contact me. I have helped many people get started. All free :)

Cheers and good luck! You can do it.

This is what I do for a living. I would recommend taking a course and getting a certificate from your local technical college. I don't think you need a whole degree. You can then volunteer to help our not for profits in your town to build up your resume. There are two ways that I have been successful working from home. The first is to register with upworthy.com as a freelancer. you may want to use it to do a couple of jobs with friends so it shows you have experience. Sort of to get the ball rolling. The other place I've had success is with flexjobs.com. I think it's $12 a month to subscribe, but there are all kinds of cool "remote" or work at home jobs. If you are in Wisconsin, let me know and I can get you better more specific info.
