Seeking PMP advisers/mentors in different industries

Veteran

Kim DeJarlais San Marcos, CA

Hello community,

I am building a network of supporters/mentors as I work through study and testing for my PMP by Jan 2019. Anyone here with experience doing PM for health care, renewable energy, manufacturing, life sciences, or even nonprofit?

Me (military spouse background) - I have 17 years of managing programs and projects that supported the military lifestyle (Marine/Navy) communities, and veteran programs. I'm transforming my personal brand and I'm eager for the change and new challenges. :)

I'm currently in the North County San Diego area, and will relocate to Colorado areas by early next year once I have my PMP.

Hi Michelle,

Thanks for the input - I am actually a little bit familiar with Dr. Wright's PMP training and program. I have finished a virtual course and will be testing through Onward to Opportunity, although I've figured I'll need to do the lion's share of my study independently via PMP book, flashcards I have to supplement the course. The feedback I have gotten from a few other PMs is that a lot of the content is pure memorization. I'll reach out to Vets2PM just to see what's available.

As a follow-up to Bernard's suggestion, I have had some luck getting in touch with PMs using the AdvisorNet finder-feature, and even met a few of them in person. I'm still curious to hear from other PMs, but at this point it would seem that my best way ahead may be to simply get my resume out there floating around to see who is interested. I went into this thinking I may be a better fit for certain industries over others (i.e. I don't have an engineering background, and I'm told oil and gas industry prefers to hire PMs with that background, and although it's not necessary but it is a preconceived notion/obstacle typical in the industry.)

Cheers,
Kim

Hi Kim,

Not sure if you've taken a PMP Boot Camp or studying solo. I'm Michelle, retired Army, HR field. I took Vets2PM PMP Boot Camp, using my GI Bill. Haven't taken the PMP yet as I'm tossing around other ideas but it's on the back burner. Once a member of Vets2PM, you have access to PMs from many industries; all vets, former vets, spouses of vets, etc. Dr. Eric Wright, veteran & founder of Vets2PM.com has a private LinkedIn page to encourage one another on the PMP journey. Also, you get a free year of PMP resources, that includes the PMP Boot Camp recorded class sessions, tutorial on re-hauling your LinkedIn page to attract what you need, a free resume update, and 2 free coaching/interview sessions, all very valuable. If anything, you can connect with Dr. Eric Wright on LinkedIn and he'd be happy to assist. All the best! Michelle
