How to best position myself for a career change to HR?

My interests are in Training and Development and Organizational Development. I have a B.A. in Organizational Leadership, over a decade of leadership and management experience, and have managed and facilitated training and development programs in the past.

Can anyone help steer me in the right direction and set me up for success?

Hi Stephen! Have you ever considered starting your own business in the training field? As a business owner you would be doing organizational development and possibly training in pretty much any business sector. Stephen... foremost, thank you for your service. I concur with Ted's comment about you knowing what you want, so now it's about acting on it. At a minimum, ensure you're registered with the Society for H.R. Management https://www.shrm.org -- and have a profile on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com; on both sites you can use 'OD' or 'T&D' as search terms. My Masters includes a focus in OD, so on your resume, suggest you state a 'Strategic Intent' at the top that describes specifically how you will benefit an employer using your OD/T&D skillset. Finally, to the degree possible (while being ethical), write about the roles in which you've served through a lens of OD/T&D -- either as a practitioner of it -- or as the recipient, in what you accomplished. Well, ya know HR people spend an awful lot of time reviewing job applicant Resumes so it seems to me you could gain a lot of experience in doing this by becoming a candidate yourself and applying for HR positions. :-)

I don't think you need to spend time "steering" right now. You know where you want to go - what you have to do now is start moving towards it. Start applying! And understand that another part of HR is knowing a whole bunch of regulations dealing with HR and that you lack that - so your not qualified right now to apply for an HR Manger position but you are definitely qualified for a lower or junior position in an HR department.
