A few quick questions about how much consultants travel:
-Are your travel dates negotiable and how do they effect career progression? For example, is a consultant who volunteers to travel often more upwardly mobile and are they compensated for additional travel? Is this not the correct way to think of it, as perhaps you travel to the extent that you are told.
-How many days a year can you expect to be on the road? I'm under the impression that a Monday-Thursday travel week is routine, how many weeks a year is normal?
-Do consultants in particular fields travel more than others?
The Navy has kept me out to sea about 50 percent of the time. I love to travel and think the on the road lifestyle may help me retain some of the excitement I might lose after the Navy. Thanks in advance for your insight into the field!

My favorite answer in consulting applies here: it depends. In short, some projects, especially those that are for Federal clients, do not necessarily involve travel or the travel may be limited, whereas some commercial projects can involve extensive travel (almost 100%). While the Sunday or Monday through Thursday travel schedule is fairly typical for engagements that require travel, it truly varies from project to project. As long as you are up front with the Project Managers about your appetite for traveling commitments, they are generally flexible as long as the client situation supports it.

It depends, as the frequency with which Deloitte professionals travel varies greatly depending on your role and which client you are supporting at a given time. For example, I supported two commercial engagements that both required weekly travel (Sunday/Monday thru Thursday), but the bulk of my client service experience has been in the federal space and has not involved any travel. The opportunity to travel is certainly there if seek it out.

When I was consulting I spent all week away from home but was able to get back Fridays for the weekend. But again it depends on the job.
