Consulting Career

Veteran

Spencer Moseley Virginia Beach, VA

I am a Navy logistician retiring after 27 years in Oct. I am now starting to look at my second career. I enjoyed the expeditionary side of my job and loved solving difficult problems for the warfighter. I would like that working in a consulting firm would give me that opportunity again. What do you think? And does anyone have some contacts in a consulting firm that I could talk with on the phone to find out more about this type of career and work?

Also looking to work someplace in Florida. The wife has gone where the Navy told us to go, and now she gets to choose the location. Very willing to travel or work remotely.

Spencer.

Spencer,

I've done consulting along those lines and would like to talk with you a bit more before offering up a few of my connections for you to talk with.

Please send me a note at steven@stevenadolt.com and let's set up a time to chat.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Steve

Hey Spencer,

Since you mentioned consulting services, and PwC was mentioned above as well. How about Deloitte? They have their CORE Leadership Program that helps veterans translate their skills, knowledge, and experience into the consulting industry. I believe it is a 2 day course in Texas, where they host seminars and networking events. Link provided below. I have heard of people getting accepted into the program and liking it. I however do not have personal experience with the program. It looks like you might still have enough time to register for the July class too if you wish.

I've enjoyed consulting for > 30 years. It's also great if you have ADD since you get to work in different projects and areas.

Unless you have a specific in-demand skill you should consider a consulting firm. There are several large firms, such as Price-Waterhouse. Expect to work hard and pay your entry dues. If you enjoy travel and short term away from home assignments then they'll consider that a plus.

If your Navy career has examples and endorsements for project management skills then you'll quickly move up the ranks to superstar.

In my career 99% of my non-technical consulting projects involved my role as an arbitrator, negotiator, implementation manager when two or more parties within a company can't agree on solution or path of action.

I just retired from my role as Advisor to the School of Engineering at U of F and was aware of an extensive list of large consulting companies who actively invested in and look to draw on the talents of the University.
